Massive Last Lap Crash for Mitchell, Still Manages Top 10 Finish in Pocono

(MOORESVILLE, NC) August 5, 2013 Mason Mitchell made his debut with the Empire Racing team in the ModSpace 125 at Pocono Raceway and finished eighth in the No. 82 Happy Cheeks Ford despite becoming tangled in an accident in the final turn of the final lap.

“We had a great run for the first time out, it's just a shame that we got caught up in that crash in the final corner,” Mitchell said after emerging from the care center following the race. “It's great to be back with Jamie Jones. We had such great chemistry last season and I knew we would pick up right where we left off. It's just a real shame we left here with a torn-up racecar. But running as well as we did here really has me excited for Berlin. We ran so well there last year and probably should have won. I have a lot more experience now, so maybe we'll get another chance to close the deal.”

Mason started deep in the field after the field was set by the ARCA rule book due to persistent rain showers that canceled Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell on Thursday. With just 50 laps to get to the front and no help from caution flags, Mitchell patiently worked to the top ten and was racing for position with Mason Mingus when a lapped car spun directly in front of him. With no where to go, Mitchell was tagged in the drivers door before spinning into the outside wall. The car was heavily damaged but Mitchell was still credited with eighth finishing position.

“Eighth is a good finish for the first time out, but I know we have a lot more potential,” Mitchell said. “The Empire Racing team did a great job with very short notice to put a great car underneath me. I cannot tell you how excited I am to have them behind me for the rest of the year.”

Next up for Mason Mitchell and the No. 82 Happy Cheeks Ford is the Berlin ARCA 200 on Saturday August 10. Live timing and scoring of practice, qualifying and the race, as well as live audio coverage throughout the day, can be found at www.arcaracing.com. The race will also be televised on the NBC Sports Network at 11 P.M. Eastern on Thursday, August 15.

Mitchell has competed in 10 ARCA Racing Series Races this season and is currently in 7th place in the points standings.
